Parish Alvars spent the winter of 1843-1844 in Naples, and his impressions of the ambience and the typical sights and sounds of that vibrant Mediterranean city are reflected in the series of three pieces he composed there. The Serenade (op.83) and the brilliant Grand Study in imitation of the Mandoline (op.84) are well known whilst the genuinely amusing Souvenir of Naples – Il Papagallo (op.85) with its witty characterisation of a pet Napolitan parrot is virtually unknown. All three pieces were originally published in Italy, but the present engraving of this delightfully ‘different’ music is based on the nineteenth century London edition made by John Thomas, Harpist to Queen Victoria. It was completely re-set in 2007. |

This special limited edition of Telyn Llanofer was made to celebrate the launch, on 12 October 2003, of Cymdeithas Arglwyddes Llanofer / The Lady Llanover Society. The rare Llanover triple harp featured on the cover, and on which some of the music in this collection may have been played, was made on the estate by one of Lady Llanover's harp makers. Pictured playing it is Lady Llanover's great-great-great-great grand-daughter, who is wearing an authentic costume, actually made for her ancestor, and worn by her in the late 1880s. 1. Gwenynen Gwent ...............John Parry, arr. Ann Griffiths

"The original publication is very rare, and it is wonderful to be able to find these virtually unknown pieces published for the first time in Alaw’s new collection. In so doing, Alaw has been able to place a veritable golden treasury of traditional Welsh harp music in the hands of the young harpists of today." |

The composer John Orlando Parry was the son of John Parry (Bardd Alaw) (1776-1851). Born in London in 1810, he studied the pedal harp with the famous N C Bochsa. He also became well known as a singer, delighting his audiences with his light-hearted musical impersonations. Like his father before him he was always welcome at Llanover, where he was a great favourite. He composed several song parts for the Llanover Choir, and he composed this harp tune when he was staying at Llanover in late summer 1865. He died in 1879. |

Here is an inspiring collection of original works for harp by a young harp student named Claire Pershan. Her music is inspired by the stories of Arthurian legend read to her as a very young child by her mother. The music is out of the ordinary, and fun to play. The compositions are not difficult, but they do have changing meter and many passages that are very good for learning specific technical aspects of playing the harp. Dynamics are well marked. All of the music Claire wrote for this collection can be performed on a full range lever harp. Guinevere is in A minor, and uses mostly 2 and 3-note finger placings. It is 2 pages in length and without lever changes. Tingagel is in D minor, 3 pages in length. There are 2, 3, and 4-note finger placings. Also, there is a 7/8 rhythm change, and some notes quite high, requiring learning some of those notes way above the treble staff. This piece also teaches phrasing. King Arthur is 4 pages in length, and in the key of D Dorian. Meter markings are 2/2, 3/4 and 4/4. Although not difficult, in one section there are LH harmonics as the underlying harmony to RH triplets. Wicked Day is in C minor, 6/8 time. Contains parallel 5ths, 3, and 4-note placing patterns. 2 pages in length. Ninian is in D Dorian ending on an A minor chord. 2 pages in length, mainly 3-note placing patterns. Its meter changes from ¾ to common time and bock to ¾ again. Ninian contains 1 and 2-measure phrases shared by both hands. Morgane, the Witch is marked with 3 flats, but C and F sharps are on permanently. It consists mainly of parallel 4ths. There are a few lever changes in this one. The final selection in this book is Sparrow Hawk. It is 2 pages in length and in the key of G Dorian with 3 flats. The meter changes several times, and there is one measure of 4/8. It's a great exercise in counting. The LH remains active with broken chords; the RH contains broken chords and also short lyrical phrases. 21 pages. Spiral bound. |

This is book 2 by the young Claire Pershan, who has already won composition contests in her home state of Connecticut. Although only age 14, her music is well thought out and nicely organized. This, her second book, contains thoughtful melodies which show a sense of maturity. The music is sometimes modal sounding, and always expressive. Intermediate level, the left hand and right hand share the stage, and many times the left hand carries the melody or an important rhythmic portion of the music. Titles are: Nature’s Hymn, Night Crossing, Arabian Sunrise, In Silva, Flight of the Firebird, Le Souvenir, Homeward, and Travel’s End. Please click on the examples below to see actual samples of each tune. Enjoy! |

These beloved melodies have been arranged in progressive key order so that the book can be played as a continuous set of background music at a gig. However, individual tunes may be selected as separate musical renditions and selections omitted as desired. These arrangements strive to capture the "flavor" of the original source works and yet retain a strong melodic component. The selections are derived from orchestral, opera, operetta and art song compositions. Attempting to transfer them to the harp is a challenge due to the unique characteristics of the instrument. Some liberties had to be taken in order to avoid unusual key modulations or chromaticism of the original works. In some instances, a separate pedal and lever harp arrangement are provided for a more satisfactory performance. Titles: Porgi, Amor - Mozart, Jupiter Theme - Holst, Musetta's Waltz - Puccini, Egyptian March, La Donna è Mobile and Va Pensiero by Verdi, Waltz & Cradle Song - Brahms, On Wings of Song - Mendelssohn, Surprise Symphony Theme - Haydn, Moderato Cantabile - Chopin, Song to the Moon - Dvořák, Minuetto - Mozart, The Swan - St Saëns (pedal/lever), O Mio Babbino Caro - Puccini, Polovtsian Dance Theme - Borodin, Barcarolle - Offenbach, Meditation - Massenet (pedal/lever), Largo - Dvořák, The Merry Widow Waltz - Lehar. 57 pages. |

This Restaurant Book collection by Dragonflower Music is intended for the intermediate lever and/or pedal harpist. These beloved melodies have been arranged in progressive key order so that the book can be played as a continuous set of background music at a gig. The selections are derived from orchestral, opera, keyboard and art song compositions. Attempting to transfer them to the harp is a supreme challenge due to the unique characteristics of the instrument. Some liberties had to be taken in order to avoid unusual key modulations or chromaticism of the original works. The arrangements contained in this collection were composed on a 34-string lever harp; therefore, they require a minimum total range of 4 and 2/3 octaves (C-A) in order to play everything as written, though most of the pieces actually require less range.
Grand March from "Norma" - Bellini, Gavotte - F. J. Haydn, Doretta's Song from "La Rondine" - G. Puccini, Che farò senza Euridice? - C.W. Gluck, Allegretto - F. J. Haydn, Emperor Waltz Themes, Op. 437 - J. Strauss II, O Sole Mio - E. DiCapua, Laughing Song from "Die Fledermaus" - J. Strauss II, Papageno's Aria from "Magic Flute" - W.A. For her latest solo harp recording Kim has selected pieces mainly from the rich repertoire of Irish and Scottish airs and songs. Kim interprets both classic melodies—"If I Were A Blackbird, Loch Lomond", and "The Selkie"—and some lesser-known gems such as: "Sleep Soond I’da Moarnin", "Ghosts of Gight", and "Dark Woman of the Mountains". The recording also features Kim’s arrangement of a section of Gustav Holst’s "The Music of Jupiter" from his inspired work "The Planets". |
Kim recorded this arrangement on her "Highland Heart" CD. Jupiter is from Holst's suite, "The Planets." It is also known as "I Vow to Thee, My Country". |

Mesmerizing to play, here is a solo for all harps in the key of F with constant time signature changes. It is not difficult but does require concentration. It's not the stressful kind of concentration, though. Playing this piece is almost like a meditation for the brain. |

A precious and tender melody provided in 2 keys: F and Eb. It is very apparent that Meg has written this music specifically for the little baby Eliana. Every note has meaning. Intermediate and for all harps. There are moving eighth notes, rolled chords and one glissando. Eliana |

By Meg Robinson - here is a "solo-ette" - it can be played as a harp solo, and it also has a lovely flute part to play with a friend! In a lilting 6/8 meter and in the key of Eb, it is not difficult. There are a few open 5ths, but not majorly large chords. The RH keeps moving with eighths, dotted eighths followed by 16ths, and a few quarter notes. There are no accidentals. A very uplifting melody that will be useful all year round! See the samples and also hear the mp3 file (real flute and harp, not electronic). Although not a Christmas piece - this is uplifting and joyful and makes a nice Christmas selection, so I have put it in the Christmas category as well as the general category.

For all harps in the key of G, here is a relaxed 6/8 piece with an Irish flair. Lower intermediate, all harps.

A meaty solo for pedal harp with modified stride bass, pedal changes, syncopation, full chords and some moving 16th notes in the RH. Upper intermediate pedal harp solo - not for lever harp.

Meg's latest creation is a soothing melody that floats between major and minor. Because of its calming nature, it is presented in 2 keys: B minor and C minor. Each version is 2 pages in length without page turns. Intermediate level, well marked with some fingerings added. The LH is consistent with eighth note arpeggios or scale patterns, not difficult. The RH is a lyric melody, single note throughout except for an uplifting section of parallel 6ths. 3 pgs.
For lever or pedal harp, in the key of G with no accidentals. Mostly arpeggios, this is the type of music your audience will recognize as perfect for the harp. It is also a good teaching piece, and is sophisticated enough to be included in a professional harpist's repertoire. Includes some simple, easy-to-read finger positions. This elegant melody will flow from your harp strings like silk. The piece can be played on a 26-string harp. 3 pgs. |
Here is a beautiful and almost haunting piece by Meg. This is one of her best yet. 4 pages, in the key of C minor, this melody kind of floats in and out in an ethereal manner. |
A lovely and sweet melody, very soothing, lower intermediate level harp. In the key of Eb, 2 and ½ pages in length. The LH is sparse and contains mostly whole notes. The RH has some syncopation and is mostly eighth notes, some being tied to quarters or half notes. The lowest note is the Eb almost 2 octaves below middle C, but it is only played one time so this piece could easily be played on a 29 string harp with the lowest note being G. 3 pages. |
This is a beautiful, relaxed almost pastorale 6/8 piece in the key of F. Flowing and calming, great to play or listen to. Lower intermediate level, can easily be played on a 23 or 26-string harp, sounds lovely on the larger harps, too. 4 pages.
This four-page tune really makes you feel like you’re sailing! In the key of G with some syncopation, this is a series of short melodic and rhythmic motifs. Lower intermediate level. The very last note is a low G, other than that the piece can be played on a 26-string harp with C below middle C as the lowest note. |
A charming and lilting melody that you'll be humming as you go. Key of D and in ¾, starts in the upper register, middle section has LH rolled chords, and the end comes back to the upper register like the beginning. Fingerings and brackets marked. Lower intermediate and relaxing. Can be played on a 26-string harp with one easy alteration. 3 pgs. |

At the intermediate level, "Latin Lullaby" is a really sweet piece. In the key of Eb, the rhythm is syncopated. There are parallel 3rds, 6ths, and 2nd inversion chords. There are triplets and pdlt. Can be played on a 26-string harp with a few easy alterations. This delightful and catchy tune is 5 and ½ pages in length. |
Here is a sweet and relaxing 5 page harp solo. It reminds me of Meg’s "Sailing on Strings" with its relaxed feel. There is a fair amount of syncopation throughout in both the LH and RH, requiring a good bit of coordination, although technically not a difficult piece. It is in the key of F, without accidentals. The lowest note is the F which is one and one half octaves below middle C. This piece has an airy, light and moving feel to it. Kind of like watching shooting stars! |
Arranged for 26-string harp and in the key of E minor, this arrangement of the famous and greatly requested tune is like a theme and variations. It is well edited with some fingerings, brackets and dynamic markings. The theme is in ¾ time and is played through one time. The 5 variations that follow are in more of a driving 6/8 time. Depending on how fast you take this, it can easily fill up a nice segment of your set with something very pleasant and not too difficult. Easy, all harps. |

The enthusiastic reactions after the release of "Harping Together" made Rosetty decide to write another volume with pieces of approximately the same level. This folio consists of 11 pieces, where the harp part has been kept relatively simple. However, in combination with the accompanying CD, it will inspire in a rhythmical sense and will make the student familiar with the various pop styles. Practice does not have to be dull! |
Among the many enthusiastic reactions Rosetty received on "Harping Together" and "More Harping Together", there was the request for a simpler book so that the young harpist could be introduced to pop and jazz rhythms at an earlier stage. In this book the solo part has been kept relatively simple so that the player can focus on playing with the CD. This book too has been produced with lots of love, fun and inspiration. Practice doesn’t have to be dull! |

The "twist" is the jazzy approach in the arrangements of these tunes that are usually played with traditional chords and rhythms. The arrangements in this book are for lever harp, but can be played just as easily on piano. Most of the tunes can be played on a lever harp with only the F and C levers, but for one tune you will also need a G-sharp. Each arrangement begins more simply and less jazzy and then evolves into a more modern sound with jazzy chords, jazzy rhythms, or both. As one of Verlene's students put it, "these are not the chords your ancestors used!" Chord names are also given for guitar or any other chording instrument. Songs are: Greensleeves Swing, House of the Rising Sun, Mo Ghile Mear, Mockingbird Song, Morrison's Jig, Motherless Child, Oh Susannah, Si Bheag Si Mhor, Silent "Jazzy" Night, Suo-gan (Lullaby), Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, and The Water is Wide. 26 pages. |

Most of the tunes can be played on a lever harp with only F and C levers, but for one tune, you will also need a G# and for another, you’ll also need a G# and an A#. Each arrangement uses either jazzy chords or jazzy rhythms or both. Chords are also given for guitar or any other chording instrument. The original compositions as they were recorded on the CD "Another World" 30 pgs. Monika's compositions are inspired by music from the classical period, jazz, free improvisation, folk and medieval elements. Her compositions arise from improvisations and from playful experimenting with new sounds and techniques on the harp. During such times, a chord or phrase may take hold of her so that she has to play it over and over again, or improvise until a complete piece is developed.Kolibri developed during an expressive dance workshop. The Kolibri symbolizes the speed and lightness of flying. Through repeatedly returning circular movements it can reach spheric heights and so find completeness within itself. The theme of Deep Inside was there suddenly during an intensive practicing session. Monika carried this theme with her for a long time until one day she was able to very easily and effortlessly find the final version. Deep Inside moves between passion free, eternally and invariable (or Constant), emotionally excited and passionate elements. From this contrast develops a lively, thrilling dialogue.
Titles: Kolibri (Hummingbird), Questions, Deep Inside, St. Thomas.

In calling this publication of some of my compositions from the past few years "Coming Home", I wish to address a profound aspect of my music which is of great importance for life and for humanity in general. "Coming Home" is a metaphor for an inner "coming home to oneself" and for "finding an inner peace within". One could also understand it as arriving at the primal source of being. Here it is where peace for the world and for humanity is born. Since my compositions come from deeply within myself and from a very intensitive "listening within" I hope to inspire you with these compositions, to make contact with your inner world and to give you warmth, shelter, hope and high spirits. Another aim of my music's complexity is to continually explore new and different technical and musical possibilities of the harp, as in "No one can stop me now".
Titles: Coming Home, Afternoon voices, It's time to say goodbye, Scandinavia, My sister's song, No one can stop me now, Maho Bay, Travelling (On the Road), I feel good

6 pieces arranged for pedal harp that are taken from traditional and modern repertoire. All have a tender feel about them and were written with love and compassion. Dona Nobis Pacem - the choral composition by Audrey Snyder is a most marvelous and meditative work that is very enjoyable to play. Something about that Name - this is perhaps the only published harp arrangement of this famous piece by Bill and Gloria Gaither; more advanced, it contains pedal changes and harmonics. Amazing Grace is written in the key of F with a few pedal changes that are to be executed during right hand glissandos. Jesus Loves Medley (with Jesus Loves the Little Children) is written in the key of F with three pedal changes. It has an interesting section with enharmonics and parallel 4ths - you'll enjoy playing that part. Softly and Tenderly is written in the key of E flat and has three pedal changes and contains larger chords and arpeggios. Finally, Were you There? is written in the key of F as well and introduces the interesting technique of knocking on the board, symbolizing nails in the cross. Intermediate pedal harp. |

Another collection of fine historical music edited by Ellen Tepper. This collection consists of 17th C Lute music by Nicolas Vallet. The book has been designed to be played as a suite on either lever or pedal harp. The music was composed early in the 1600's as dance music. Little is known of the composer, except that he was French by birth, and lived in exile in Amsterdam as did many French protestants (Huguenots). He taught lute and ran a dancing school.
All of these pieces are presented firstly as a suite for lever harp, and then again for pedal harp, so each title is in the collection twice. Edits are beautiful with some fingerings, lever changes with diamond shape notes, and dynamics. There are a significant amount of both lever changes and pedal changes. Pedal changes are also marked. Wonderful music to add to your repertoire. Early music like this always adds a special ambiance to background music, and also to performance.
Titles in this lovely collection: Prelude, Branle d'Irlande, Onder de Lindegröne, Mal Simmes Bal Anglois, Packingtons Pound, and Loath to Depart. |

This is an ancient Welsh air that was first published in Relics of the Welsh Bards in 1794. This melody is one of the most moving and memorable from the musical heritage of Wales. The dying harpist, David, asks his family to bring his harp so that he can touch it for the last time. An angel appears to him, telling him to play the harp during his last journey. The rising figuration in the second verse accompanies David's soul as it rises to heaven. "Bring me my harp", was David's sad sigh, |

It's in the key of A minor. For lever harp, you will need to slide middle D# to natural, and then F# above middle C to natural, and then Middle C# to natural. (Pedal slides on those same notes.) There are a few other lever changes: G# at the end. You start out by setting F and G sharps below middle C. Not hard, impressive and everybody knows and loves this great tune! When you purchase this, you receive both the lever and the pedal solo. Each is on a pullout 11×17 page (one side). Lever and pedal harp can play this in tandem. It wouldn’t be a duet, but it would be a fun duo. |

La Source is probably the best known of Albert Zabel’s compositions for the harp. Born in Berlin on 22 February 1834, Albert Heinrich Zabel studied the harp at that city’s Institut für Kirchen- musik, where his teacher was Louis Grimm, a former student of the English-born virtuoso, Elias Parish Alvars. Zabel’s concert career began at an early age, when he toured Germany, Russia and England as a member of an ensemble directed by Johann Gungl, who, in 1848, settled in St Petersburg. From 1848-1851, Zabel was solo harpist with the Berlin Opera, but in 1855, he too moved to St Petersburg, becoming solo harpist with the Imperial Ballet – a post which he held to the end of his life. It is therefore likely that he was the first harpist to play in such Tchaikovsky ballet scores as ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and ‘The Nutcracker’, and it is possible that it was his style of harp playing which inspired the brilliant cadenzas Tchaikovsky included in these ballets. Harp teacher at Anton Rubinstein’s St Petersburg Con-servatory from its inception in 1862, Zabel was named Professor in 1879, and honorary distinguished professor in 1904. His late works include a comprehensive ‘Method’ (1900) and a Concerto in C minor (1904-5). |
