Elegie pour la mort d'un Berger (Lament on the Death of a Shepherd) was written in honor of a shepherd friend of Bernard Andres and his wife. This melody came to him on a walk as he passed the shepherd's house; after returning from his walk, Andres found out that his friend had passed away that morning. This piece is an excellent example of Andres' ability to blend contemporary and classic harp techniques in an effortless medley that is truly enchanting. 8 pages.

Bochsa based his delightfully frothy little Rondo on the marvellously witty trio 'Zitti, zitti, piano, piano' from Rossini's 'Barber of Seville', based, in its turn, on the comedy by Beaumarchais. A commedia in two acts, Rossini's opera received its first performance in Rome in 1816, and despite being hissed on that occasion, it soon gained enormous popularity. Bochsa was already living in London and may well have been present when the opera received its first London performances two years later. |

They include Concertos, Sonatas and many duos for single-action harp and fortepiano, of which the Opus 69 Duo-Sonatas written for performance by himself and F.J. Naderman in 1810 are the most notable. The group of six Sonatinas of which the present work is is the last, was written for the noted virtuoso Madame Krumpholtz, who was married to the composer-inventor J.B. Krumpholtz. |

The three pieces in the set were written for Artemy Izmaylov, fourth generation harpist, and son of the composer, when he was eight or nine years old. A Dream, the nocturne-like first movement, concentrates on arpeggios and a singing tone, whilst the second, Sad Waltz, has a slightly more difficult left hand, supporting a legato melody in the right hand. Both pieces are Grade 3 standard. The Toccata which ends the suite is longer, more demanding (Grades 4-5), and is a fascinating study-demonstration, in miniature form, of various compositional techniques. These include frequent time-changes, contrapuntal elements, independence of the hands, sometimes with the two different main themes in both hands at the same time, but all blending into a cohesive whole and an attractive solo harp piece. Beautifully written for the instrument, the pieces For Artemy have a contemporary freshness of appeal, far removed from the traditional mould of harp writing. They may be played as a suite, or performed separately. Deliberately written so that there are no pedal changes except for the E pedal used in the Toccata, they can be played on lever harp as well as on concert harp. |

Saint Petersburg-Vienna Concerto-Waltz
celebrates the link, via the Waltz, between two of the greatest musical
cities of the nineteenth century. Then came the railways. One hundred and seventy years ago the first railway in Russia was built to link St Petersburg with Pavlovsk, site of the royal palace, and the railway station with its magnificent terminal building, known as the Vokzal, was opened on 10 October 1837. Early musical ensembles invited to play there included the band directed by Franz Gung'l (1845-48) and afterwards by Josef Gung'l, who (with Zabel as harpist) played the summer season between 1850 and 1855. From 6 May 1856, with his 26-man orchestra, Johann Strauss Junior, 'The Waltz King', spent eleven summers entertaining St Petersburg high society at Pavlovsk's 'musical train station'; thus were consolidated the links with Vienna already established in 1852, when Strauss had composed his Grossfürsten Marsch (op. 107) to celebrate the visit of Tsar Nicholas and his sons to the city. Idolised by the Russian public, Strauss achieved pop-star fame, and many of his most enduringly famous compositions date from these visits to Pavlovsk, including the Tritsch-Tratsch Polka and the Pizzicato Polka. Such works as the Pavlovsk Polka and the Faust-Quadrille were published only in Russia, whilst his waltzes 'Viennese Bonbons' and 'Parting with St Petersburg' were inspired by his love for Olga Smimitskaya, a St Petersburg aristocrat. It is the Waltz King who can also be credited with drawing attention to the genius of Tschaikovsky, whose 'Characteristic Dances' he introduced to the public in 1865. Together with his brother Josef, Johann Strauss undertook his final Pavlovsk concert in 1869, whilst performances in 1886 at St Petersburg and Moscow, and a single concert at Pavlovsk marked his last visits to Russia. His creative baton was passed on to Mikhail Glinka, whose concerts continued the tradition. In 2003, on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of St Petersburg, the Austrian consulate presented the city with a copy of the famous sculpture of Strauss by Edmund Hellmer that used to stand in Vienna's Stadtpark, and appropriately enough, the statue is now one of the features of Pavlovsk. At the turn of the 21st century, the tradition of summer music seasons which was interrupted in 1917 has been resumed. A sixth Grand Waltz Festival held in St Petersburg in July 2007 and a Russian Ball in the historic Hofburg Palace in Vienna in January 2008 consolidate these links. The aim of these new international projects is to resume and develop cultural dialogue between Russia and Austria, and particularly between St Petersburg and Vienna. Andres Izmaylov's Concerto-Waltz, St Petersburg-Vienna provides a delightful link for the harp in this cultural musical chain. |

This piece was originally written in 1546 for the Spanish Vihuela, a kind of lute. The fantasia is described as 'imitating the harp as played by Ludovico'. Ludovico was a harpist of note who used experimental tunings on his diatonic 27 string harp. The daring dissonances inspired Madurra to imitate then in his Fantasia. Ann Griffiths transcribed this piece to re-create music 'en la maniera de Ludovico' as it was played in Spain more then four centuries ago. |
