This collection includes different level arrangements of international winter and Christmas music that Stefanie has collected and edited for her lessons.

When all pieces are examples for guidance from simple to intermediate level. Moreover, chord symbols added, so with the help of the harmony itself can improvise their own accompaniment.

The first part of the collection contains pieces that are arranged for solo harp .

In a number of pieces in the second part the harp is used as an accompaniment to a voice or a melody instrument. It is also possible to play the melody with the right hand and a left hand bass accompaniment.

The pieces in the third part are suitable for ensemble playing with two or three harps. A part has the melody, and all other parts are in harmony with the melody. Combinations of all parts are possible.

Not all pieces have fingering, because Stefanie has the opinion that it is best to determine your own fingerings.

The Ring of Harps continues in the tradition of Nancy’s other ensemble books, with arrangements for mixed level groups, which are fun to play for everyone. The tunes are from Scotland and Ireland, and include a duet, three-part and four-part ensembles. There are also seven great solos. In addition to the usual toe-tapping Scottish reels, the arrangements use melodic patterns to suggest ripples in the sea (Aran Boat Song), fluttering wings (The Butterfly), and jingling coins (Little Donald of the Sweets). There’s a wonderful range of styles from ancient harmonies to traditional Carolan to jazzy reels.

Larkin, Linda - "Ensemble Etudes"

Studies / Ensemble (3 harp parts)

€  ####

Here is a series of short skill-building etudes to be sight-read by harp ensembles.  Most parts are for only one hand, for the ease of the player (and relief) and to attain completion and satisfaction quickly.  The titles are:  Early Memory [skills: rhythm and listening, key of F], Recurring Dream [skill: finger damping, key of C], Moonlight Remembered [skill: arpeggios, key of D], Fantasy [skills: etouffe, harmonics, PDLT and improvisation, key of Eb], Lightness [skills: rhythm and dynamics, key of C].  This is a unique collection, as the pieces are not necessarily easy.  They are for harpists who have played at least a year.  Not all parts are the same level of difficulty, some are more so than others. They are for players wishing to increase their proficiency in ensemble performing.  The composition "Fantasy" is very unusual as it provides 8 bars which are blank – an opportunity to improvise!
Larkin, Linda - "Waltzing to Sayulita"

Duet / Ensemble (1 to 4 harps)

€  ####

Linda has captured the Latin flavor of this Mexican beach town in her original tune by using Latin rhythms. It is for 1, 2, 3, or 4 harps. Harp 1 can be a solo. The triplets, PDLT and Latin rhythms all come together for a great sound. The solo harp version is simple, and with the added parts, the ensemble begins to sound very full, even though the parts are easy. The piece is in A minor and there are a few lever changes (G#’s). There are 4 pullout parts, and the score is bound with spiral.
Harp 4 is very easy and can be played with one hand on a lap harp.
Harp 3 requires a full range lever harp (or pedal harp), and contains rhythm only with some chords. Adv. beginner to lower intermediate
Harp 2 requires a full range lever harp (or pedal harp), and contains both rhythm and melody. In general, one note in each hand. Intermediate.
Harp 1 is very similar to harp 2 but has more melody and chording. Can be played as a solo. Intermediate

The third part is always the simplest, with broken chords, which are divided in two hands. The first part is also easy and only takes the melody, usually with one hand. Robertson, Kim - "I Vow to Thee (Jupiter) for 3-harp ensemble"

Ensemble - 3 harps

€  ####

Kim Robertson has arranged ensemble harp parts to be played with her popular solo arrangement of Gustav Holst's "Jupiter" theme from "The Planets," also known as "I Vow to Thee." Here's how it works. One harpist plays the original solo sheet music. The new "harp ensemble" version will be used by any additional players. This companion ensemble version includes both a 2-page arrangement for Intermediate harp players (requiring 2 octaves below middle C), and a 1-page Easy harp arrangement (for harps with 1 octave below middle C). Either or both of these additional versions can be played along with the original solo arrangement. So, although the new version is entitled "for 3-part harp ensemble," I asked Kim if it would work with just two harps, and she said "yes!" She just hadn't thought of it that way when she arranged it.
You need both the solo version and the ensemble version for an ensemble. In the key of C, with no fingerings and no lever changes. Chord symbols included. 3 pages of music (2 intermediate and 1 easy).

Robertson, Kim / Laura - "More the Merrier"

Ensemble - 3 harps

€  ####

These fun arrangements by Kim Robertson and Laura Zaerr are for ensembles of 3 harps, but also work great with only 2 harps. Parts 1 and 2 are for advanced beginner to intermediate lever harp players. Part 3, which is optional, is suitable for beginners. The 4 popular Celtic tunes are Arran Boat Song, Butterfly Jig, Buzzy Chanter and Pibroch of Black Donald. To play Buzzy Chanter, harps 2 and 3 play the "buzz" effect by weaving a piece of paper between the harp strings. The pieces are in the key of C or sharp keys. Each arrangement includes the full score, and the 3 individual harp parts, all spiral-bound together in one book. Each harp player will need their own book. The few easy lever changes are clearly marked, but there are no fingerings. 58 pages, spiral-bound.

Whether your harp ensemble has only 2 or 3 harps . . . or many more . . . you'll love these fresh arrangements.

Robinson, Meg - "Dance of the Harps"

Ensemble

€  ####

This hauntingly beautiful three-part harp ensemble was commissioned for the opening of a new 2000-seat concert facility, Strathmore Music Hall, in Bethesda, Maryland. Dance of the Harps is presented with an underlying 3/4 accompaniment of swaying rhythm. The melody is shared between the first and second parts, while the third part provides underlying rhythm. The melody develops and expands and is followed by a sharply contrasting middle section, which is much faster and jig-like. In this section, the harps let loose in their dance, which has become spirited and playful. Following this faster middle section, the ensemble returns to the original melody, but with greater intensity and rhythmic vitality. As the piece comes to its dramatic conclusion, layer upon layer of rich harmonies unfold and become increasingly intense, culminating in a bell-like explosion of syncopated celebratory sound. The piece can be played by an ensemble of beginning to intermediate lever or pedal harpists, as each of the three parts is written with a different degree of technical difficulty.

Schermer, Verlene - "Tunes We Play Together"

Ensemble

€  ####

As one of the primary ensemble leaders for Harpers Hall, Verlene has had many years of experience leading a multi-level harp ensemble and has arranged several pieces for the Harpers Hall Ensemble in two or three parts. This book includes eight of her arrangements – four Christmas pieces, two traditional Celtic and two classical. Harp one is usually the easiest part, with harp two at intermediate level and harp three more advanced. The two classical pieces don’t follow this division of levels, but both are at intermediate to advanced intermediate level.  She has included suggestions on how to use the book with either two or three harps, or full harp ensembles.  Many of the three part pieces can also be played as a duet or solo.  Complete songlist: Carol of the Bells, Flower Duet, Glass of Beer/Burning of the Piper’s Hut, Gymnopedie #1, The Holly and the Ivy, Silent Night, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, and Willafjord. 30 pages.

Tepper, Ellen - "Drewrie's Accordes"

From Jane Pickering's Lute Book (c. 1616) Arranged by Ellen Tepper Lutenist Jane Pickering was associated with the court of Henry, Prince of Wales. This piece is from her notebook. Arranged in several ways for harps in various combinations: HARP DUET with 2 equally challenging parts; HARP TRIO with harps 1 and 2 in treble clef only, with some lever changes, and harp 3 as a two- handed "accompaniment" part. A score is also included for study or conducting. DUET FOR HARP AND OTHER TREBLE INSTRUMENT (i.e. flute, violin or recorder), for pedal or lever harp. The Harp 1 part from the Trio version may also be used as the solo instrument with this version. The music assumes the range of the harp to be from C below middle C to the C above treble clef, and is suitable for most 26-string models with levers on C, F and G. There is a high B-flat that can be tuned ahead or preset with levers if you have them. The parts are of varying difficulty to accommodate the wide range of harp playing and reading abilities. All pedal notations will be found below the staff, and lever changes indicated by diamond-shaped notes

Lolipops (Welsh spelling) is a collection of familiar Welsh songs arranged in four parts for pedal or lever harps. Intermediate. 12 pages.

Pop Goes the Weasel is a traditional English nursery rhyme and singing game originating from at least the middle of the eighteenth century.

Counting the Goats is a Welsh nonsense song but great fun, as each verse introduces a goat of a different colour, starting with white, then red, blue, black etc., the repeating chorus (presto) getting longer and longer and faster and faster.

The Bells of Aberdovey is another Welsh folk song, and sings of the legend of Cantre'r Gwaelod, a submerged kingdom beneath Cardigan Bay. The harmonic sounds in this arrangement depict the echoing bells, which, according to folklore, can still be heard ringing under the waves.

Thomas, Sian Morgan - "Song of the Crib

Ensemble (3 harps)

€  ####

Originally sung as a lullaby, Song of the Crib (Cân y Preseb) was associated with the medieval custom of cradle-rocking during the Christmas services. The traditional words Joseph lieber, Joseph mein appear in a manuscript at Leipzig University c. 1500 as part of a mystery play, acted in church around the crib. The tune, which was probably composed in fourteenth century Germany, has been incorporated into other more modern compositions; Brahms for example used it as a viola obbligato in his song Geistliches Wiegenlied.

Level: Intermediate. Score and 3 Parts. Pages of music: 5.

Thomas, Sian Morgan - "Berceuse de Dolly"

Ensemble (3 harps)

Berceuse de Dolly by Gabriel Fauré will be familiar to many as the signature tune of Listen with Mother. Originally written as a piano duet in 1893 - 96, this popular piece is arranged for lever harps in three parts. 6 pgs.

Thomas, Sian Morgan - "Hob y Deri Tango"

Ensemble (3 harps)

€  ####

Hob y Deri Dando is the refrain of an old song of the Druids used to call the people to religious gatherings in the groves. It is likely that the English song, "Hie down, derry down" is derived from the same source. An invitation to the Oaken Groves was usual with lovers in former times as was the custom of driving the hogs to feed on acorns. The tune has two versions, one in South Wales, another in North Wales, and there seems to be no end to the number and variety of verses, both Welsh and English, not necessarily translations. The recurrent theme is that of unrequited love. The Tango is an extra variation - just for fun! 6 pgs.

Sweepin' the Clouds Away
Zaerr, Laura - "Scottish Suite"

Ensemble - 3 harps

I've recently heard from two harp ensembles who have performed this piece, and they both raved about how much they loved it! Laura Zaerr has combined two Scottish tunes into this suite for 3 harps. Music of Spey is a fiddle tune by James Scott skinner (1843 - 1927), and Willafjord* is a reel from the Shetland Islands.

The only lever changes are the G naturals to modulate from the key of A (3 sharps) for Music of Spey, to D (2 sharps) for Willafjord, and you're given plenty of time to make these changes. Fingerings are not included. The Harp 1 and 2 parts are intermediate level, and include harmonics, chords breaking downwards, arpeggios, and tapping on the soundboard. The Harp 3 part is very easy. The three parts interweave into a beautiful, intricate whole. Although this suite sounds the best with all 3 harp parts, it could also be adapted for 2 harps, without the Harp 3 part.

The three harp parts and the full score are all spiral-bound together in one 40-page book. Each player will need to purchase their own book.
(Willafjord is also known as Happy One-Step, Villafjord, Willa Fjord, Willafiord, Willow Fjord, Wullafjord, and Willasford)

Sweepin' the Clouds Away
Zaerr, Laura - "Join We Now"

Ensemble - 3 harps / Christmas

This book of Holiday music was arranged for multi-level harp ensemble by Laura Zaerr. Each piece is presented in a full score format over multiple pages, and also in separate harp parts. The exception is On the Cold Ground, which is presented only in full score format because it does not require any page turns. The individual harp parts are primarily on two pages with no page turns. Masters in This Hall has a single page turn for Harps 1 and 2, with plenty of time for the left hand to turn pages.

These arrangements are ideal for harp trios and ensembles with three levels of harpists. Harp 1 is the most difficult, with Harp 2 more intermediate, and Harp 3 easiest. For harp duos or ensembles with mostly intermediate and advanced players, you can use Harps 1 and 2 and omit Harp 3 for all but Noël Nouvelet, which can be made into a duet arrangement by combining Harp 2 and 3 together by reading from the score. The Harp 1 parts of On the Cold Ground and Il est Né can also be played as a solo, as well as the first part of Harp 1 on To Drive the Gold Winter Away.

Noël Nouvelet, and To Drive the Gold Winter require Bbs and On the Gold Ground will need Bbs and a preset Eb below middle C for Harps 1 and 2. If your harp does not have levers on these strings, you will need to retune them for those pieces. There are also accidentals on three of the pieces: Masters in This Hall requires a D# for harps 1 and 2; Harp 2 of On the Gold Ground has an F# lever change; Harp 2 of To Drive the Gold Winter Away will have some C# lever changes.
