Solo

€  ####

Here is a book of well thought out arrangements that are easy and interesting to play. They are creative and work very well on the harp. Simple yet effective, retaining the correct harmonies. We also checked the table of contents, and these pieces have not been overdone. This collection is desirable for many types of occasions: teaching, weddings, therapy, recital, and many more. Classical music is acceptable in any situation, and these arrangements are a most welcome addition to the harp repertoire. Easy to lower intermediate, all harps. Well edited with dynamic marks and fingerings. Mr. Hill comes from a formal classical guitar background, and these arrangements reflect that, rather than being from a piano source.

Izmaylov, Andres - "For Artemy"

Solo

€  ####

The three pieces in the set were written for Artemy Izmaylov, fourth generation harpist, and son of the composer, when he was eight or nine years old.

A Dream, the nocturne-like first movement, concentrates on arpeggios and a singing tone, whilst the second, Sad Waltz, has a slightly more difficult left hand, supporting a legato melody in the right hand. Both pieces are Grade 3 standard. The Toccata which ends the suite is longer, more demanding (Grades 4-5), and is a fascinating study-demonstration, in miniature form, of various compositional techniques. These include frequent time-changes, contrapuntal elements, independence of the hands, sometimes with the two different main themes in both hands at the same time, but all blending into a cohesive whole and an attractive solo harp piece.

Beautifully written for the instrument, the pieces For Artemy have a contemporary freshness of appeal, far removed from the traditional mould of harp writing. They may be played as a suite, or performed separately. Deliberately written so that there are no pedal changes except for the E pedal used in the Toccata, they can be played on lever harp as well as on concert harp.

Solo

€  ####

This collection of arrangements for the Celtic harp features many of the tunes from her album Ar y Ffin. The metronome marks, fingerings and other instructions are meant only as guidelines and suggestions. She has left the Welsh traditional tunes without metronome marks, as she feels it is up to the player to interpret the music as they like. The beauty of traditional music is that it is being continually re-interpreted. These arrangements are Delyth's interpretations, and players can either play them as written or, if they prefer, use them as a springboard for their own interpretations. Delyth Jenkins plays the Celtic harp, but these arrangements could equally well be played on the pedal or triple harp, and also on the piano or keyboard.

During one of the CD recording sessions Nienke van Leijden participated in, Clemens got the idea to compose some pieces for (lever) harp. That challenged Nienke to agree to take care of the arrangements. The result was this book including practice CD. The CD stimulates and accelerates studying.

The fifteen compositions provide variety and are easy to listen to. The required level is 'average' (approx. 3-6 years of lessons). The pieces are divided culinary into appetizers (light), main courses (heavy) and desserts (medium). No matter how you like to select your menu, you won't gain any weight. Loughnane, Kathleen - "Affairs of the Harp"

Solo

€  ####

In this book you will find the same tunes as they were recorded on the CD with the same name. The CD also features Alec Finn, Sean Ryan, Sharon Shannon, Mary Staunton, and Martina Goggin.

Much of the music in this collection is drawn from work of the harper composers of the 17 and 18 centuries, and the mostly anonymous composers of the dance music. The shapes of the arrangements owe much to the musicians I have listened to along the way. There is nothing sacrosanct or final about the written arrangement and it is only by listening to traditional musicians, especially the solo player, that a sense of style and ornamentation is acquired.

My hope is that these arrangements will strike a true chord in those who play them. The Irish harp is currently enjoying a remarkable revival. It has played a significant part in the story of Irish music for over a thousand years, and happily, as we move forward in the new millennium, it has returned to take its place in the heart and mainstream of that music.

Loughnane, Kathleen - "Harping On"

Solo

€  ####

The mood of the selection encompasses the lift and energy of traditional dance music and the expressive range of ornamented slow airs. The music originates with the harper composers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries - Ó Catháin, Connellan, and O’Carolan - and the mostly anonymous composers of the dance music.  Whilst they were developed on and for the harp, these settings can also be played on keyboard instruments.

Lunsford, Reba - "Dragons and Dinosaurs"

Solo / Duet

€  ####

Many young students enjoy cuddy kitty cat and beautiful butterfly images in their music. However, some students would rather eat bugs than play cutesy things. This book is for them. Eleven beginning level pieces, eight with easy accompaniments that can also be used as duet material for beginners or as filler by teacher. Most songs are in the key of C, with one in G (one sharp). A few pieces have accidentals that are pre-set, so there is not lever flipping. Along with the music, many songs have basic theory and technique points to help build their musical knowledge, such as intervals, accents, and thumb slides. Brackets, raises, and fingerings are marked. Illustrations are in black and white, so students can be "rewarded" for doing well on their pieces by coloring the pictures in. Worked for me when I was a kid. (Reba) 22 pages. BEGINNER, ALL HARPS.

Contains: Glowing Orbs in Darkness, Baby Brontosaur Blues, T-Rex, Whispering Wings, Triceratops Waltz, Happy Chinese New Year!!, Hiding, Hannah's Dragon, The Lost World, Come Out and Play, Dragon Treasure.

Mahan, William - "Colors of Italy"

Solo

+ CD €  ####

If you like the music of Frank Voltz, you will absolutely love this collection from William Mahan of some of the most beautiful melodies ever. Truly inspired, these compositions can be used for any type of situation: for yourself, for healing music, for background music, for recitals. The music is not difficult, but the LH does require some crossing over and under. True to the Italian flavor, some of the melodies incorporate triplet and mordent ornamentation. You'll need a full size lever harp or pedal harp to play these tunes. There are a few lever changes, but with just a little practice they will go smoothly. Gentle and flowing, you'll find a lyric right hand melody supported by lush chords. Some fingerings are included. The music has been edited by Mary Radspinner. Please listen to the samples and take a look at the visual examples from some of the pages. All music either in C or G. The final tune, All the Colors of Rome, is a 5-minute plus performance piece that is gorgeous. Mary Radspinner plays through all the titles on the CD, using a Dusty Strings Bubinga 36S.

There is also a C# lever change. Rain in E minor, almost monotonous and excellent for meditation, An April Lullaby in G and ¾, marked "tenderly," Good Morning to May in G and ¾, a slow and simple tune that is lovely, Here's to June in 4/4 key of G, has more drive than the preceeding tunes, and Spring Nocturne in C and 4/4, very simple to play with only a few full chords. Although there are a few straggly low notes here and there, all of these pieces can easily be adapted to a harp with 29 strings or even 26.

Mahan, William - "The Iowa River Suite"

Solo

€  ####

The melodies in this collection are absolutely beautiful. They are so enjoyable to play! They're interesting, not too challenging, and engrossing; almost reminicient of movie background music. Each title has a dedication or a brief explanation. They are all for a full range lever harp (can be played on pedal harp, too) and there are very few lever changes. Generally the RH is easy. Sometimes there are cross-overs and unders in the LH. Listen to the midi files on the web site to hear some samples! Also available with a computer generated CD, select below. Titles are: Riverboat to Davenport, Iowa's Mississippi, Wapsipinican Lullaby, Cedar River Song, Snow on the Iowa, Moonrise on the Des Moines, The Little Sioux, The Wide Missouri, Farewell to the Prairie.

28 pages. Spiral bound.

Mahan, William - "The Montecito Suite"

Solo

€  ####

A very beautiful collection of impressionistic-type selection. This is a more diverse collection, with the LH accompaniment more developed than most of Mr. Mahan's selections. C and F levers required. Montecito Morning is in the key of D, 2 pages with lovely embellished 7th harmonies. Walking Down Butterfly Lane is very easy to play, but the harmonies make up for the simplicity. Treasure of San Ysidro has a mysterious sound to it. Key of A minor with a variety of rhythmic changes throughout - an interesting composition to play. Canyon has a breezy feel to it, key of C with an easy LH. Lotusland as another mysterious sounding composition in the key of B minor, switching back and forth from ¾ to 6/8. Montecito Moon in ¾, key of C has a busy LH, full rolled chords in the RH along with moving eighth notes. A View from Eucalyptus Hill is a lovely melody with a variety of LH changes throughout. Moves from ¾ to 4/4 and back to ¾. Key of C.

23 pages.

Mahan, William - "The Santa Barbara Suite"

Solo

€  ####

Nights of the Fiesta is eight pages in length, starting out with a short fanfare type introduction and merging into a Spanish motif. It is in the key of E minor and in triple meter. Not difficult to play, but does require good technique. There is a moving LH, and the RH utilizes parallel 3rds and quite a few repeating notes. Part 2 of this suite is called The Sunken Gardens. It is in the key of A minor and goes back and forth between 3 and 6 in meter. Consisting much of single notes in both hands, some parallel thirds in the RH and using triplets. Part three, entitled The Old Mission, is in a meter of six with directions to play forcefully at the beginning and reverently up until the section sounding like bells ringing. B minor is the key, and this portion of Mr. Mahan's suite requires a LH capable of a rolling 16th note accompaniment. The ending is on a peaceful D major chord. There are some repeated notes in this collection, see the example by clicking on the image or title. These pieces may be ideal for the double strung harp!

The Wind that shakes the Barley (Nice version of this well-known reel because of the "lift" given to the tune by the syncopation in the first and third bars), Low down in the Broom, Major Graham of Inchbrakie, The Fall of Foyers Eas na Smuid, Craigie Waltz, Ruairi Dubh, An Cuala sibh mar thachair dhuinn, Eilean Beag Donn a'Chuain. The Little Brown Island in the Sea (Wonderful Gaelic song. This arrangement is meant to portray the island shrouded in mist as the sun slowly rises), Sona's Strathspey, Deil tak the Wars, An Euchdag, Mrs. Oswald of Auchencruive (Mrs Oswald follows on very nicely after the Wind that shakes the Barley!)

€  ####

Original music for Lever Harp. Elisabeth loves photography, and enriched her first publication with accompanying images and poetry. The photographs in Netty's Garden are by Elisabeth's brother Rob, a keen and talented photographer. The compositions in the book stem from her imagination and the heart. Netty's Garden is inspired by the image of a young girl exploring the garden.

Titles: Freesia, The Swing, Anemone, Frog in the Pond, Cloudplay, Dragon Fly

Freesia. Gentle flowers, wonderful shapes. She would like to pick them, but decides they look better in the garden.

The Swing. Netty on the swing, swings higher and higher, the sky is blue and when she's done she jumps off.

Anemone. From the open window piano music drifts into the garden: it is her grandmother playing in a 19th century style. She admires the anemones with the music in the background.

Frog in the Pond. Wandering though the garden, Netty arrives at the pond, where a frog catches her eye. The frog swims happily from a rock to a waterlily leaf, and climbs onto it. When Netty gets too close, it jumps into the water again.

Cloudplay. Stretched out in the grass, Netty looks up to the clouds. As they drift by, the shapes tell stories.

Dragonfly. A dragonfly catches Netty's eye as it hovers close by. She studies its gossamer wings.

Morricone, Andrea - "Love Theme from Cinema Paradiso" arr. Stanley Guy

This beautiful, romantic and mysterious sounding piece may be recognizable to you.  It is from a 1990 movie, told in flashback, about a man's childhood friendship with an old man who was the projectionist at the local theater in Italy.  There are some wonderful embellished jazz chords in this piece.  Also included is a simpler 1-page version on the back page, which eliminates a couple of tricky lever changes.  This is a notable addition to our harp repertoire.

Mudarra, Alonso - "Fantasia"

Solo

€  ####

This piece was originally written in 1546 for the Spanish Vihuela, a kind of lute. The fantasia is described as 'imitating the harp as played by Ludovico'.

Ludovico was a harpist of note  who used experimental tunings on his diatonic 27 string harp. The daring dissonances inspired Madurra to imitate then in his Fantasia.

Ann Griffiths transcribed this piece to re-create music 'en la maniera de Ludovico' as it was played in Spain more then four centuries ago.

A great opportunity for harp teachers to have their students to buy a bundle of harp harp music for a very competitive price.

This lovely compilation is the result of the first annual New Century Harp Competition. Carol; An Cailin Gaelach ("The Irish Girl"); When a Knight Won His Spurs; adapted from The Fair Flower of Northumberland; Three Swiss German Folksongs; Melodies Charmantes, French lullaby; Wade in the Water, Spiritual; Exhilaration, Early American Hymn; Farewell to Tarwathie, traditional whaling song; The House of the Rising Sun; Durme, Durme, Sephardic Lullaby. New Century Harp Music - Vol. 2 - Winning entries from 2007

Those of you who enjoyed last year's book of winning arrangements will both enjoy these fresh tunes and notice quite a difference! New harmonies and involved rhythm patterns make this collection for the most part a tad more challenging. John Sheridan has arranged two Cornish folk songs "The Sweet Nightingale" and "Delyow Sevi". He includes one verse of the vocal lead-line followed by very lovely arrangements using a variety of harpistic effects and unusual harmonies. His arrangements are wonderfully different and so enjoyable to play! Gaalen Noland's "Celtic Ode to Joy" is another exceptional arrangement with some tricky and jazzy rhythm patterns and an active left hand. I was delighted with Mack the Knife. Although still under copyright, we were given generous permission to include this arrangement in the book and thank the Kurt Weill Foundation. It's a really fun arrangement and what a neat song! (Please note that the rules state that all tunes must be in public domain, and this rule shall stand for all further competitions.) Tears of Joy by Ulpia Erdos is an original and is rhapsodic and highly arpeggiated – quite harpistic. It's in C minor, is 9 pages in length with some tricky counting challenges. Sight reading in public is not recommended on Erdos' piece! Margo Krimmel's two arrangements Shenandoah (almost mesmerizing) and Planxty Earl Grey, are rich in harmony and arrangement, yet still retain a simple elegance and are very enjoyable to play. Myriam Reid's "Sally Gardens" is a beautiful and expressive arrangement, and Lisa Boggess' "Miami Dawn" is a lovely original using a wide usage of chords in ¾ that is simply elegant.

LEVER HARP intermediate to upper intermediate.

Nelson, Ken - "Lisa's Song"

Solo

€  ####

With a feeling of royalty about it, this pretty melody makes a beautiful harp solo. In the key of C without lever or pedal changes, the range goes to the C two octaves below middle C. Begins the theme with a simple chorded left hand. The theme repeats several times, each time growing richer. The left hand becomes a little more involved each variation, with an Alberti-type bass, broader chords, and the final variation is majestic with large chords and a sweeping A minor arpeggio. A very pleasing melody, Lisa's song might very well become a requested wedding march. Intermediate level, ending in with large rolled chords which might be considered upper intermediate. 4 pgs.

O'Carolan, Turlough - "Two Carolan Tunes"

Solo

€  ####

The book contains two harp solos Kean O'Hara and Carolans's Concerto.

Toirdhealbhach Ó Cearbhallaín, better known today as Turlough O'Carolan - the anglicised form of his name - was born in 1670 in Ireland. At the age of eighteen, Carolan contracted smallpox, as a result of which he became totally blind. His patroness then apprenticed him to a harper for three years, maintaining him until he was a finished pupil. Having provided him with the means of making a living, she equipped him with a horse and provided him with a guide and money, so that he was enabled to set forth on a very successful career as a harper.

The fashionable popularity of Italian music and Italian musicians in eighteenth-century Ireland was a major influence on the music of performers like Carolan, and thus led to music in the style of this 'Concerto'.
